Hell hath no fury like an angry belle

* * *

“Why would you even do that?” Ever hissed. She didn't want her voice to carry. She had jumped up from Sunday brunch and abandoned Virginia with the boys when she’d heard the heavy knocking at the door.

So she stood on the dead grass between the gravel drive and the house, wondering how many and which of her neighbors were watching what had to be a fight. She couldn’t take it inside though. Ever couldn’t do this in front of Virginia and the boys.

“What do you mean?” He seemed thoroughly confused and mad at the same time.

Well, she was mad, too. Jax’s last little cluster of texts had been a mess. He’d asked if she even worked at Gladiolas. He’d said since the place was closed, she must already be home. Then he messaged he was on his way there to find her.

That was the first time Ever texted back. She’d been frantic to stop him. The last thing Virginia and the boys needed was an upset Jackson Mayfair showing up at two a.m. on a Sunday morning wondering where she was. She'd written back and said, “I AM at work. Thus I’m BUSY. Please don't bother me. And don't go to the house.”

It was harsh and rude, but she was panicking. And she’d been quietly panicking ever since. He’d not messaged her again and she’d not reached out either, telling herself she had plans for the day and she’d take care of Jackson Mayfair later.

Then her brunch was interrupted. He’d parked his squad car—of all things!—in front of her home and knocked on her door in full uniform. He was on shift apparently, but that didn’t stop him. It appeared Jackson Mayfair was going to take care of it now.

“It was closed, Ever. You weren't there.” He said it like an accusation.

She yelled back, shifting topics just enough. The lies rolling a little too easily as she bit off each word. “I’m a server! Why would you go there? Did you want me to wait on your table so you could leave me a nice tip?”

He tipped his head and glared at her as if to say, you know that's not why.

“Then what? You wanted to show your friends your waitress girlfriend?” She was waving her hands, gesturing wildly. Fear bubbled out of her feeling like anger. “You want to interrupt my work so that you can say hi?”

“That’s not what it was, Ever!”

“Then what was it?” She planted her fists on her hips, feet wide as she stared him down. She didn't give him time to answer. Whether that was because she was upset or because she was consciously cutting him off to make sure he couldn't win this or even ask her anything that she couldn't or wouldn't answer, she didn’t know. She just felt a need to make sure he didn’t get a word in. “Jackson, first you interrupted my work last night, now you're interrupting my Sunday brunch.
